Beware of Interjet's prices to Central and South America - be sure to do the math

Sometime last year, Interjet restructured their bag fees.

Like a lot of low cost carriers, they charge extra for checked baggage.

However, with Interjet, you pay per segment. And all of Interjet's flights from Vancouver to Central and South America route through Mexico City.

For example, with a roundtrip flight from Vancouver to Lima, Peru you would pay the following bag fees:

Vancouver to Mexico City - $36 CAD
Mexico City to Lima - $36 CAD

Lima to Mexico City - $36 CAD
Mexico City to Vancouver - $36 CAD

-- $144 in bag fees for a roundtrip flight.

By structuring their bag fees this way, Interjet can make their fares to Central and South America appear a lot cheaper than other airlines in the search engines.

For example, here's April 6 to April 20 from Vancouver to Lima...

...when in reality they are priced about the same as other airlines.

So be sure to do the math first when comparing Interjet's prices to Central and South America against other airlines.

Dido. Interjet changed the flight time for hours without evening informing me.

And one day before departure, I used the Interject App to check whether the flight was on time. Guess what? Its App indicates there was no such a flight tomorrow!!! I then used the same App to check how I can buy a ticket for tomorrow's flight. Now the flight appeared to be there and on time.

The lesson: Interjet will take you to your destinations. That's all right; however, there will be a lot of hiccups along the way. Be prepare for them psychologically.

Icelandair did the same thing for the recent flights to Paris through Reykjavik. $130 for a checked bag, PER LEG. There are two legs each way - to and from Paris, therefore $260 EACH WAY for a checked bag. Ridiculous.

Avoid INTERJET at all costs!!! Many delays,no notifications.
Left me and kids in limbo at MEX (avoid that airport at all costs too). Zero support. Didn't even wanted to talk to me. Without escalating requested to talk to supervisor, they called airport security.
Customer service doesn't exist.Numerous attempts to get through to various Customer Service number. Didnt get through once. Longest wait 90min.Currently trying to find Canadian rep of the airline for legal claim. Mexican based office doesn't care. Welcome to the world of lawlessness. Absolute sham. Do not entrust your travel and especially yourself and family to that Mexican dodgy outfit.

Used Interjet to Lima last October. Price was good, under $500.
Had no problem at all. Basic service, nothing fancy. No delays, didn’t have to pay anything extra for check in baggage.

    Hi Lena,

Thanks for the feedback - Interjet used to include baggage in their prices between Canada and Central/South America, but they changed their policy in late 2019.

I used interjet to Cancun return in January 2020. When I booked back in January 2019 being alerted from you Chris I got a direct return flight from YVR for $225 which included the Mexican immigration tax! But in Sept 2019 they stopped flying direct and my trip changed to a stop in MEX. In December I was checking their flight history and noticed late by an hour an half many times. The return flight from Cancun only gave an hour and a half to change in Mex from domestic to International.going to YVR. Customer service was terrible and wanted a big fee to get an earlier flight from Cancun. What I did was get to Cancun airport 3 hour early and they let me get the next flight leaving in 15 minutes for no extra charge. The flight I was originally booked for was an hour and half late so I would have been stuck for 24 hours in MEX. I found their flight crew and airport counter people excellent but customer service by phone not so good. I just had lite carry on so no baggage fee and easy to get around in MEX. Thanks Chis for a fantastic Deal!

I have had good experiences with InterJet. Domestically and International back to Canada. Except it is a red eye back to YVR from MEX. Gets you in early!

Just returned on the $285 total RT YVR-LIM flight with Interjet. Their customer service at YVR was actually worst out of all the airports, but overall everything went pretty smoothly. My biggest complaint was that only 1 bathroom on all 4 flights had soap in it, on the plane. (Gross! After flight 1 I took hotel hand soaps and left them in the bathroom for everyone to use...). We had checked bags included because we had booked before their policy change (I assume that’s why), BUT I called their call centre first to confirm and they put me on hold for a while before actually confirming it. I did this, my travel companion didn’t, and at YVR they were going to make him pay ($36 for YVR-LIM in its entirety, not per individual flight YVR-MEX / MEX-LIM). However, I had free baggage on my booking but not a bag to check in so I just checked his under my ticket. We both booked the identical fare class at the same time, so the only difference I can note is that I called beforehand to confirm, and he didn’t.

Just flew with interjet from YVR to San Jose Costa Rica in late Feb to early March 2020, layover both ways
in mexico city, no extra fees for checked luggage (1 piece 50lbs max), was concerned we would have to pay additional for our luggage on the connecting flight but it was all good. Good service and only a 1hr delay on the way there. Snacks and drinks on both flights. For the price, I would fly with them again. Nothing to complain about here!
