Vancouver to Bali, Indonesia | $849 roundtrip including taxes

Malaysia Airlines is currently showing some Vancouver to Bali, Indonesia (DPS) airfares that are as cheap as I can recall ever seeing.
A few things I've learned about these fares so far:
- They seem to have long stopovers in Tokyo (NRT), starting at 9 hours.
- They also stopover in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (KUL)
- The Vancouver to Tokyo and Tokyo to Kuala Lumpur flights are actually operated by Japan Airlines, a very nice airline.
- It looks to be possible to get extended layovers in Tokyo and/or Kuala Lumpur for approximately $50 more. In theory you could visit Japan, Bali, and Malaysia on one ticket for under $900!
- Flights to Jakarta, Indonesia (CGK) may also have been affected
- These fare looks to be available on spring and summer 2014 flights.
Here's one way I've been exploring the multi-city flight possibilities...
1. Go to http://www.hipmunk.com/flights-search
2. Click on 'Multi City'
3. In the 'From' box, enter YVR::MH9769+ (note the little plus symbol)
This is an interesting feature of the Hipmunk search engine that tells it we want one or more of the legs of our journey to involve Malaysia Airlines Flight 9769 (which is actually operated by Japan Airlines). Airfares involving this flight appears to be the key to getting the cheap price.
Just to note, if you're searching for a regular roundtrip flight between Vancouver and Bali (DPS) without an extended stopover in Japan, I would probably just enter YVR, it seems to work better.
4. In the 'To' box, enter NRT for Tokyo, Japan. Let's choose August 13 as our example depart date.
5. In the second row of boxes, enter NRT to DPS, which is the flight from Tokyo to Bali. Let's use August 20, giving us a week in Tokyo.
6. In the third row of boxes, enter DPS to YVR, which is our flight home from Bali to Vancouver. Let's use August 27, giving us a week in Bali.
We end up with something that looks like this:

7. Now hit the Search button
Hipmunk now gets us to pick what flight we want for each leg. After you've picked all 3 legs, Hipmunk shows you where it can be booked, on a screen that looks like this:
You can try editing your search on Hipmunk to play around with different dates and destinations to see what prices come up. For this deal, I would focus on using combinations of the following destinations:
NRT - Tokyo, Japan
KUL - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
DPS - Bali, Indonesia
CGK, Jakarta, Indonesia
SIN - Singapore
BKK - Bangkok, Thailand

Success! Vancouver to Tokyo for a week then 2.5 weeks in Bali.
August 4 VVR > NRT
August 11 NRT > DPS
August 29 DPS > YVR
$789 USD - wow!
Found trips to Jakarta or open jaw of landing into Bali and flying out Jakarta for the same price (both with the same Tokyo trip en route). Same dates but Bangkok was $822 as another great option.
Tip but long winded so stick me me:
I found hipmunk slow to check dates as you can only search for one date at a time. Instead used http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ to do my searching for a return trip (not including the Japan layover) as you can look at a month calender of airfares and enter duration ranges up to a week (example 21-28 days). ITA showed the cheapest days to travel on but about $200 more than hipmunk. Once I new the cheap travel days I entered those dates back at hipmunk and scored a deal!

Thanks Chris! I just booked 3 days in Tokyo and a few weeks in Indonesia $756 return.

*remember, folks... It's across the date line, so you'll need to add a day for your outgoing flights from NRT or it will show no availability or an error.
We booked it at the 756 price with the Japan stop over and have brought 350 return flights from Bali to Perth Australia as well. We were looking at flights to Perth for April and May and we were looking at 2100. We now have the same destination with an added stop in Bali for nearly a grand less Per person. This is a MAGICAL deal and worth booking. Dont dilly dally, you know you will regret it!
Wonderful island so worth another visit. Amazing people, food & culture. Definitely on the return to bucket list!

For this particular deal, I was tinkering around with the dates and noticed that prices rise substantially if you depart YVR anyday before Apr. 6 and return anyday after May 19.
In other words, it seems like you can book a flight to Bali for $800-$900 as long as your trip is between Apr. 6- May 19.

It does seem like in March you need to depart after March 18 to get the cheap price. March 19 to April 2 works, so does March 24 to April 7. What you might want to try is first searching for cheap date combinations on Google Flights Explorer...

Used your YVR-Bali suggestion to find a March flight YVR - Kuala Lumpur -
Kota Kinabalu - YVR flight for CAD$897. About 1/2 the usual!

Please be advised:
If you plan on travelling to Bali in early spring, please consider the Balinese holiday Nyepi Day on March 31, 2014. This is a day of silence in Bali meaning that everything is shutdown: hotels, retail stores - even the airport.
If you have anything booked (airfare, hotel, etc.) on March 31, 2014 for anything in Bali I suggest you contact the appropriate channels to reschedule.
What dates are people finding for June? We haven't found anything under 1500/. We'll keep trying but advice would be appreciated. Hope we haven't mised it!
You might be a little late unfortunately Mikelly, prices seem to be higher now. YVR Deals posted this 11 days ago, and when YVR Deals posts something you usually have to act fairly quickly. Make sure to sign up for alerts if you haven't already. (Alerts menu is at the top of the website)
Managed to book YVR->KUL -> PEN -> NRT -> YVR (May.9-25th) for $775 CAD all in. Malaysia for 10 days and then Tokyo layover for 5 days on the return leg. I think there are still cheap dates available but getting harder to find.
Nice one John! If you happen to be able to still see it, please share a link if possible. Took a look on Hipmunk but doesn't seem to be this cheap anymore!
